You and Your Environment • The Ecological Systems Theory states that human development is influenced by the different types of environmental systems. • Urie Bronfenbrenner formulated this theory to help us understand why we may behave differently when we compare our behavior in the presence of our family and our behavior when we are in school or at work.

The Five Environmental Systems 1. The Micro System 2. The Mesosystem 3. The Exosystem 4. The Macrosystem 5. The Chronosystem

The Micro System • The micro system’s setting is the direct environment we have

The Micro System • The micro system’s setting is the direct environment we have in our lives: • Family • Friends • Classmates • Teachers

The Mesosystem • The mesosystem involves the relationships between the microsystems in one’s life.

The Mesosystem • The mesosystem involves the relationships between the microsystems in one’s life. • This means that your family experience may be related to your school experience. • For example, if a child is neglected by his parents, he many have a low chance forming a positive attitude towards his teachers.

The Exosystem • The Exosystem is the setting in which there is a link

The Exosystem • The Exosystem is the setting in which there is a link between the context where in the person does not have any active role, and the context where in is actively participating. • Suppose a child is attached to his father. The father leaves for a business trip…. there may be a conflict between the mother and the child…. or there may be a result of a tighter bond between the two.

The Macrosystem • The macrosystem setting is the actual culture of an individual: •

The Macrosystem • The macrosystem setting is the actual culture of an individual: • The socioeconomic status of the person and family • Ethnicty or race • Living in a developing or third world country • For example, being born to a poor family makes a person work harder everyday.

The Chronosystem • The chronosystem includes the transitions and shifts in one’s lifespan. •

The Chronosystem • The chronosystem includes the transitions and shifts in one’s lifespan. • For example, divorce may affect not only the couple’s relationship but also their children’s behavior.

Childhood Obesity • What are the five ecological factors that impact the increase in childhood obesity? • Group 1 - 1 - The Micro System • Group 2 - 2 - The Mesosystem • Group 3 - 3 - The Exosystem • Group 4 - 4 - The Macrosystem • Group 5 - 5 - The Chronosystem
