THE EAR – PART 1 DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN ANTOMY – MUCOM 2019
Objectives Ø Know the anatomical divisions of the ear and its main function Ø Learn the main features of the external ear including features of the auricle with its innervation and blood supply. Ø Know structure, innervation, blood supply and function of external acoustic canal and tympanic membrane Ø Demonstrate the main anatomical features of middle ear, including bony ossicles and main relations of middle ear cavity. 04 December 2020 Department of Human Anatomy - MUCOM 2019 2
The ear is the organ of hearing and balance. It has three parts: Department of Human Anatomy - MUCOM 2019 3 04 December 2020

External Acoustic Meatus The external acoustic meatus does not follow a straight course. From the external opening it passes upward in an anterior direction, then turns slightly posteriorly still passing upward, and finally, turns again in an anterior direction with a slight descent. For examination purposes, observation of the external acoustic meatus and tympanic membrane can be improved by pulling the ear superiorly, posteriorly, and slightly laterally 2. 5 cm Sensory Innervation branches of the auriculotemporal nerve (anterior and superior walls), and the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (posterior and inferior walls). Tympanic membrane It lies at an angle and thus Its lateral surfaces inferiorly and anteriorly. Department of Human Anatomy - MUCOM 2019 8 04 December 2020

The middle ear is an air-filled, mucous membrane–lined space in the temporal bone between the tympanic membrane laterally and the lateral wall of the internal ear medially. Department of Human Anatomy - MUCOM 2019 12 04 December 2020

Pharyngotympanic Tube • Equalizes pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane. • It pass forward, medially, and downward to enter the nasopharynx. • Branches from the ascending pharyngeal artery and from the middle meningeal artery and the artery of the pterygoid canal. • The pterygoid venous plexus. • Tympanic Plexus (glossopharyngeal nerve).
