The Duke of Edinburghs International Award Y 10
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Y 10 Coffee Morning
There are three things that I want you all to take away from this presentation.
1. What the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is
2. How Y 10 students complete their Bronze Award
3. Parental involvement
What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award? The Award was conceived and designed by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Dr Kurt Hahn, founder of Outward Bound and the United World Colleges, and Lord Hunt, leader of the first expedition to conquer Everest. The Award is a challenging programme available to all young people aged 14– 25.
How do participants complete their Bronze Award?
There are four sections to complete the Bronze Award. Three are very similar to CAS (Community, Action and Service). In the Dof. E they are called Physical Recreation, Skill and Service. Two out of the three sections require 1 hour per week for 13 weeks. The remaining section requires one hour per week for 26 weeks or 6 months (we call this the major) which is picked by the student. The fourth section is two expeditions, the practice and assessed Adventurous Journey (AJ). In the practice AJ students receive support from teachers whereas in the assessed AJ they should not receive any help from the teacher.
What can you do as parents
Please remember that the Dof. E is all about teaching young people life skills. If you take too much control of their Dof. E experience this crucial benefit of the Dof. E will be lost.
Thank you very much for listening, I will be taking questions near the coffee area. If you have any questions my email address is KICL@patana. ac. th.
