The Dual Alliance; Germany and Austria-Hungary’s alliance made in 1879

Introduction; >What it was and who was involved; The Dual Alliance was an agreement created on October 7, 1879 between Germany and Austria Hungary. This alliance was a pledge of aid if Russia attacked either of the two countries. It also served as a statement of neutrality if any other European nation attacked either country. >Why it was created; Chancellor Bismarck won small wars which allowed him to create a small German empire. Unfortunately, this brought up a fear that the nations that surrounded the new empire would act to destroy it. Those nations included France and Austria-Hungary which had been defeated in order to create this new empire. Bismarck carefully planned alliances and decisions to protect this new growing empire. An alliance with France was impossible and so Bismarck formed an alliance with Austria-Hungary and Russia in 1873. This alliance was known as the Three Emperors League. Eventually, Russia withdrew and the Dual Alliance was created between Germany and Austria-Hungary for protection against Russia.

If one country of the two countries were attacked, the other would fight beside it or hold neutrality and not help the opposing side. Germany and Austria-Hungary were working together; fighting one side meant disrupt with the other. >How it led up to the world war o n o; ; One main cause of the world war was the many alliances formed at the time, including the Dual Alliances were made between countries for aid when needed. Many alliances were formed during the time. This meant that some countries unwillingly fought in the war because their alliances had forced them to fight.
