WHAT ARE THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEMS JOBS? The digestion systems main job is to digest and absorb food. It breaks down the food into small molecules, then lets the body absorb them.
THE ORGANS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM The organs of the digestive system are the: Stomach- breaks down food with digestive juices, then sends it to the small intestine Small intestine- send food waste to the large intestine and absorbs nutrients Large Intestines- turns waste into stool and sends it to the rectum Rectum- holds stool until you have a bowel movement Mouth- where the food starts in the digestive system. You swallow the food and the mouth sends it to the esophagus. Esophagus- pushes the food to the lower esophageal sphincter Lower esophageal sphincter- opens to let the food pass into your stomach and closes to keep what's in your stomach from coming up your esophagus
HOW THIS SYSTEM WORKS WITH OTHER SYSTEMS IN ARE BODY The digestive system works closely with the circulatory system to get some nutrients distributed throughout your body. The circulatory system also moves chemical signals from your endocrine system that controls the speed of digestion.
COMMON DISEASES AND SYMPTOMS Chrones Disease- painful burning in the digestive system. Celiac disease- prevents your body from gluten. Cholera- makes you have extreme diarrhea because of an infection in the small intestine. Jaundice- makes your skin appear green, orange, or maybe yellow. Can also cause whiteness of the eyes
ANALOGY PICTURE OF A SPONGE A sponge has a similar job to the digestive system. A sponge absorbs water and the digestive system absorbs nutrients in water in the small intestine. The sponge also gets read of waste on dirty dishes. The digestive system gets read of waste in your body.
