The aim of the project • To implement a nursing electronic practice assessment document from September 2017 • 300 BSc and 150 GEN students from 3 fields of nursing: Adult, Child and Mental Health. • Across 9 NHS Organisations, 1000 s PVI placement with in our region • Involves over 7000 practice assessor – Nurse Mentors (External Pebble. Pad users) • T&F Group established: Stakeholder involvement.

Why go Electronic? e. PAD Advantages… • Electronic is part of the government strategy (Willis 2012, HEE 2015) • Many AEIs and professions have electronic PADs • Paper isn’t perfect…. . Bulky, no space • Current practice assessment document can be a barrier for mentors • A more user friendly process • Improve the quality of assessment • A natural step forward. . • • • Security – prevents lost and damage Accessibility, student monitoring Opportunities for electronic communication No limits on space or word count Improved quality Increases efficiency, of our processes Pulls information together for reports/moderation Cost Opportunity for research

What worked…. • Keeping the document similar to the paper version • Using Pebble. Pad was key • Good communication with IT departments in partner organisations: Firewalls, filters, browsers, Wi-Fi and device access • Good training and support resources for externals • Provision to loan devices and dongles • Having a central support contact

What we need to work on…. . • External accounts set up • Technical issues – up to date browsers • Auto recovered documents • Record of attendance • Interconnectivity

Evaluation and feedback “I’ve just had a student and it was great, it saved loads of time, not flicking through the book constantly trying to find the pages that you need to complete” “I though it was excellent, loads of space to give feedback, its good not to be restricted by tiny boxes to write in. I was able to give more quality feedback and write a structured action plan” Concerns regarding change! Digital Culture…. . “Easier to access students document at any time” Access to device and internet – reality this has “Intuitive and user friendly” been minimal. “it does save the trees and it is lot easier to use!” Vast majority of concerns related to external accounts being activated - Passwords Some technical problems ie browsers, auto recovered documents. PAN Midlands & the East – the growth of the collaboration • To implement a collaborative practice assessment document for nursing inline with the new NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses • Established PAN Midlands and East Practice Learning Group • 26 AEIs in the Midlands and East of England – many HEI’s share practice placements • HEE funding

Why should we work in partnership? There is a lack of collaborative development of the mentorship role (National Nursing Research Unit 2012 and RCN 2015) Cross-organisation working is required to provide a strategic and collaborative approach from HEI, providers and NMC The Shape of Caring Review highlighted the inconsistency in the practice assessment requirements between HEIs and recommended a standardised national assessment framework (Willis, 2015). NMC – we will work with you to facilitate the development of a regional or national PAD (NMC, 2018 National PAD Event) • National PAD supported by NMC • This is a natural step forward…. • Other regions/countries have already successfully implemented a collaborative PAD (Wales/Scotland) • Collaborative approach to the implementation of the NMC Standards and Education Framework • Opportunities for further collaborative working: Shared resources and quality assurance processes

What does this mean for our e. PADS? • The PAD - Turning paper into electronic • We are all at different stages with our current e. PADs - different systems or scoping • Its not if……its when…. . • Share what works and learn from each other; design, platforms, approaches, process, workflows, reports. • How can we keep consistency and version control? • Thousands of External Users across England • Digital infrastructures in Health. Next steps - working together • e. PAD workstream – Pebble. Pad shared island for collaborative development across AEIs • Ideal world we would all have the same systems. What ever systems we choose we will work together to gain consistency with our e. PADs • The aim is to enhance consistency and keep version control • Working in partnership – we can develop systems and workflows that enhance the student experience and make the system easier for practice • Share what works and learn from each other; design, platforms, approaches, process, workflows, reports • Shared development of support resources
