Spatial Reasoning When you hear spatial reasoning, what comes to mind? Why it matters: • Experiences examining and describing 2 and 3 dimensional shapes • High predictive value to success in math • Explore how to decompose and compose shapes • Maneuvering space • Directional words (right, left, forward, back) • Transformational words (slid, flipped, rotated) • Helps develop fluency and flexible thinking in other areas • Supports students’ ability in measurement • Builds concepts of proportional reasoning • Measuring space • How much space it takes to cover or fill an object • Decomposing and composing shapes © DMTI (2018) | RESOURCE MATERIALS | WWW. Spatial Reasoning: Rotation Pentominoes • Create your own set of pentominoes • Connect five squares with at least one side of a square matching a side of another square • There are 12 different shapes to build • These shapes can be drawn on graph paper • All 12 shapes can be arranged into a rectangle Extension: Is there more than one way to arrange the rectangle? © DMTI (2015) | RESOURCE MATERIALS
Spatial Reasoning: Rotation Pentominoes • Child can create different designs with the pentominoes • Try to draw the design created (plain or graph paper) • Create designs and trace around the outside border of the designs • These borders become activity cards for the pentominoes © DMTI (2015) | RESOURCE MATERIALS
