• THE DEPRESSION IN THE CITIES (con’t) – Especially difficult for African Americans and Latinos – African Americans • Unemployment rates were higher • Lowest paid • Racial violence for competing for same jobs as whites
• THE DEPRESSION IN THE CITIES (con’t) – Latinos – mainly Mexican and Mexican Americans • Latinos living in the southwest were targets –Whites wanted Latinos to be deported or expelled from the country even if born in America
• THE DEPRESSION IN RURAL AREAS – One advantage Farmers had over city folk is they could grow their own food – Between 1929 -1932 400, 000 farmers lost their land through foreclosures
• DUST BOWL – Drought wreaked havoc on Great Plains – Dust Bowl • Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado • Farmers had to leave their land
• For the most part, families stayed together during these rough times
• MEN IN THE STREETS – Men had difficulty coping with unemployment – Men would walk the streets in search of jobs – There was no direct relief provided by the government as cash payments or food
• WOMEN STRUGGLE TO SURVIVE – Women managed the household budgets – Women worked outside home but were paid less money than men – Women were resented by men for working
• CHILDREN SUFFER HARDSHIPS – Poor diets – No health care – Schools closed or shortened year – Children went to work laboring in “sweat shops” – Wild Boys – ride the rails to find work
• SOCIAL & PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS – Suicide rate went up – More people being committed to Mental Hospitals
