The Demise of Guys Ted-Talks Yen-Lian Liu 2016. 09
Philip Zimbardo • Psychologist / sociologist. • Professor at Stanford Uni. • Stanford Prison Experiment (1971). • The Lucifer Effect (2007)
Outline • Feminist or sexist? (The lesson from Titanic). • David Benatar: The Second Sexism (2010) • Bill Burr: “Women often go on TV and say they want to be treated exactly like a guy. But if you listen to them, they don't. All they want is good sh**s of being like a guy. ” • Guys are being wiped out, academically, socially, and sexually, with women.
Academically. . . Men are… • 30% more likely to drop out of school. • 2/3 in special remedial program. • Zimbardo: “Girls outperform boys at all levels from elementary to graduate school. ”
Socially… • “Fear of intimacy” • “Social intense syndrome”: the problematic preference of male bonding over female mating. • “Social awkwardness” towards women that leads to improper interactions.
Sexually… • “Arousal addiction”: emphasis on Internet world over spontaneous interactions. • Average porn click… • Cindy Gallop: “guys don’t know the difference between making love and doing porn. ” • https: //makelovenotporn. t v/
Conclusion • The society has been tolerating the sexism against men but intolerant of that against women. • As we advocate female protection and female autonomy, men are simply “left there. ” • Responsibility of popular media: princess syndrome & soap-opera addiction. • Gender structure should aim at balance, instead of power and independence.
