The Fourth Crusade 1202 -1204 n Sent by Pope Innocent III n Crusaders never went further than the Byzantine capital and their behavior was an embarrassment due to their cruel deeds.
The Children’s Crusade 1212 n Known n Ended as the Children’s Crusade in disaster. n Led by a peasant boy and encouraged by their parents n Many died while trying to cross the Alps n Others got to ships going to North Africa and sold as slaves.
The Fifth Crusade 1217 -1221 n Was fought to conquer Egypt. The Egyptians lost and offered to trade their city for Jerusalem but the crusaders rejected the deal. n Crusaders lost other battles and were forced to trade their lives for all they had gained.
The Sixth Crusade 1228 -1229 n No battles n Emperor Frederick II got Jerusalem from the Moslems through diplomatic means
The Seventh Crusade 1248 -1254 n Led by King Louis IX of France n He was captured and the nation of France had to pay a huge ransom.
Eighth Crusade 1270 n After King Louis IX returned to France, he attacked Tunis (North Africa). n He died during the siege and the crusaders returned home. n That was the end of the crusades.

#1 n The crusades were the first united effort of Western Europe.
#2 n The religious motive was a far more noble cause than the greed, ambition, and revenge that were the usual reasons for fighting.
#3 n They stopped the Moslem expansion that threatened to overwhelm Europe.
#4 n They increased the power of kings, since many of their more powerful vassals were away.
#5 n The rise of cities increased since the feudal lords needed the cities’ help to finance their trips.
#6 n They improved relations between lords and peasants and tended to unite the society.
#7 n Europeans became more familiar with geography, not only of the Mediterranean region, but their own countries.
#8 n Europeans became aware of new products, new methods of farming, and the writings of Greeks and Romans that had been long forgotten in Europe.
#9 n Europeans discovered that the Moslems were not idolaters or barbarians. Their education was superior to that of Europeans n Europeans became aware of how much they had to learn.
#10 On the negative side n Europeans believed that religious wars were pleasing to God. n There was bloodshed and persecution of small minority groups in Europe.
