The Crusader’s Chronicle Edition #8 The Crusader’s Chronicle February 20, 1845 15 cents Page 1 The Life of a Slave Frederick Douglass shares life experiences By Robert Eng Crusader’s Chronicle More fuel for abolition movement Frederick Douglass autobiography helps abolitionists By Robert Eng Crusader’s Chronicle Frederick Douglass’s recent release of the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave has given the abolitionists another example of the cruelties of slavery. Frederick Douglass gives them a unique perspective from the slave’s point of view. It unlocks a realm the abolitionists will use in the coming years to fight the monstrosities of slavery. Frederick Douglass can be described in many ways: a thinker, a writer, a former slave, or a black man. But most importantly, he is an abolitionist. By using his own past experiences as a slave, he poses a strong argument against southern slave owners and slavery. Born in Talbot County, Maryland, he grew up knowing very little about his mother because his master would always separate families to discourage family connections. Frederick describes the horrors slaves endured including listening to his Aunt Hester get whipped and scream by their master and watching the blood drip down her back. Growing up, Douglass moved around from owner to owner, picking up skills and experiences along the way. Using this method, he learned to read, write, spell, and learn some trades. Frederick Douglass also is sent to the infamous slave breaker Edward Covey where he is almost broken mentally and physically. Douglass finally does the unthinkable and retaliates telling Covey he will not be broken. After a failed attempt at freedom with Mr. Freeland, Douglass does not give up and tries again and succeeds. Today, Frederick Douglass is touring Europe speaking in Protestant churches on anti-slavery and abolitionism.

Crusader’s Chronicle Man runs into Invisible Church and says ouch! Secret meeting revealed by Robert Eng Crusader’s Chronicle A few days ago, Smully Smith Jenkins was taking a stroll along the Atlantic Ocean of his private plantation of several thousand slaves and ran into invisible church. No, he was not hospitalized from a bump on his head. This was an invisible church made by a congregation of slaves from his plantation and others around police say. Mr. Jenkins promptly took care of the matter, although some slave owners did complain about the condition their slaves were in when they returned. Plantation and slave owner, psychologist, and antiabolitionist David Eng says this is an example of what not to do. “Never teach a slave to read, ” Eng states, “it gives February 20, 1845 those slaves a chance they won’t let go. ” Because a slave could read the Bible, this in effect started the invisible church. Another famous plantation owner, Mr. Auld, states that “If you give a nigger an inch, he will take an ell. A nigger should know nothing but to obey his master – to do as he is told to do. Learning would spoil the best nigger in the world. Now, if you teach that nigger how to read, there would be no keeping him. It would forever unfit him to be a slave. He would at once become unmanageable, and of no value to his master. As to himself, it could do him no good, but a great deal of harm. It would make him discontented and unhappy. ” Page 5 International News: The Great Potato Famine Outlook bleak for Ireland by Robert Eng Oversees Reporter It’s not looking so good for the Irish because their main source of food, the potato, has been infected with a new disease called potato blight. Crusader’s Chronicle Woodcutter found dead Amazing healer by Robert Eng Crusader’s Chronicle Supposedly an amazing healer and a woodcutter of the far west has recently died. For private reasons his family does not want to release his name. In the woodcutter’s diary which was just released, he allegedly made an agreement with Death for his magical powers of healing. The woodcutter was found in a room with a lit candle and a burnt out one. Investigators are looking into it, but there seems to be no evidence at all he was murdered, sick, dying, or any had other medical condition. February 20, 1845 Cursed Ring Haunted ring circulating throughout Southwest U. S. by Robert Eng Expert on Myths and the Supernatural La Llorona, a brokenhearted woman, killed herself and her child because the father of the child killed her friend. The maid named Malinche took the ring off the dead woman’s finger and kept it. She too started to kill and killed her three children by drowning them in a river. When Malinche died, a woman named Unfaithful Maria took this ring. It is said that her thoughts were evil and she killed all three children she had. Also on top of that, if a passerby turned their head towards her, their neck would become twisted forever. This is an interesting story I have heard many times in varying versions. In most cases, there is a cursed object and a way that this object is handed down from person to person. My personal favorite version of the story is of a man who was eating an egg. Because the temperature was a multiple of 24, there was a solar eclipse, and he was wearing only one sock, he was cursed to lay eggs the rest of his life and anyone who ate those eggs would have to lay eggs too. Anyone who looked at him would act like a chicken for a day. Page 6 Dear Counselor Eng, Counselor I, Manuel Natividad, was going to marry on a Sunday. As usual though against my parent’s and sweetheart’s advice, I went to dance on Saturday. On the way though, I picked up a beautiful girl who wanted to go to the dance too. I was lighting a cigar for her and to my surprise it was the Devil Woman! She clawed me with her long gruesome fingernails and tore my shirt off. My friends found me the next day, but my girlfriend doesn’t want to marry me. What do I do? From, Manuel Natividad Dear Manuel Natividad, Very interesting. I’m not the expert on myths and the supernatural, but I suppose that maybe your girlfriend is very frustrated that you went when she told you not to. She may just be thinking that this might happen again, except she is the one that is hurt. I also think there is some deeper meaning somewhere in your story. Like you were watching television… Just a thought. From, Counselor Eng
