The 1 st State Constitutions The Americans faced the task of forming independent governments @ both the state and national levels. January 1776 – New Hampshire first colony to organize as a state and craft a detailed, written plan for government – CONSTITUTION State Governments Bicameral – 2 houses of legislature Governor – elected by legislature and carried out state laws Judges & courts – decide what the laws meant & how they applied. Most state constitutions included a bill of rights – guarantees certain basic freedoms & legal protections to citizens.
The Articles of Confederation Needed for military protection and colonial unity. Confederation – a group of individual state governments that band together for a common cause. “League of Friendship” 1781 – All 13 states had approved (Ratified) the Articles. 1 house legislature – 1 vote per state (Confederation Congress) Law pass = 9 states. Amendments = unanimous vote No governors or courts Accomplishments: Laid the foundations for the administration of the US Provided for the systematic growth & development of US
Shay’s Rebellion Created by Congress taxing state citizens too much to cover Revolutionary War costs. 1, 200 farmers attacked a federal arsenal in Massachusetts 1787 – 12 states sent delegates to revise the Articles of Confederation.
