Microscope Care and Use 1. Always carry the microscope by holding the arm with one hand supporting the base with the other hand. 2. Place the microscope on a flat surface with the arm bent toward you. 3. Look through the eyepiece and adjust the diaphragm so that light comes through the opening in the stage. 4. Place a slide on the stage so that the specimen is in the field of view; hold it in place with the stage clips. 5. ALWAYS focus first with the coarse adjustment and the low-power objective. 6. ONLY the fine adjustment is used with the highest power lens.
Microscope Care and Use • Change objectives by using the revolving nosepiece – keep your fingers off the lenses. • Special lens paper is needed to clean the objectives. Do not attempt to clean the lenses yourself. • Keep the microscope away from the edge of tables. • Before leaving your station, change back to the low-power objective, turn off the light source and cover the microscope. • Do not move the microscope towards you; instead, move over to the microscope.
How to Focus • To focus using the highest power lens, begin with the low-power objective and the coarse adjustment. • Make certain the object you want to view is in the center of your field of vision. • Once the object is clearly viewed, switch to the medium-power objective and focus using the coarse adjustment. field of vision leg of common house fly, 20 X
How to Focus • Once you can see the object clearly under medium-power, move the slide so that the area you want to see is in the center of the field of view. • Change to the high-power objective and focus using the FINE adjustment ONLY. • Recenter. knee joint, 100 X
