Where is the Colima volcano located? Country: Mexico State: Colima, Jalisco Latitude: 19. 51 N Longitude: 103. 6 W Elevation: 12, 595
How did the Colima Volcano form? The Colima volcano started forming with several earthquakes beneath the volcano, followed by explosions and rockfalls at the summit lava dome as it began to grow. Dome growth was accompanied months later by a series of lava flows. The mountain, stretching up to 3, 100 meters (10, 000 feet) from the summit. The dome growth continued with a few periods of actively flowing lava. The dome was growing about 2, 000 cubic meters (70, 000) cubic feet a day, leading to frequent small rockfalls. The Colima volcano is also at a convergent boundary.
Colima eruption history The Colima volcano has been erupting for many years. The volcano has been erupting since 1519. The last eruption was: 2014 -2015 (ongoing)
What type of volcano is the Colima ? The Colima volcano is a composite volcano. It’s composite because… it is tall, majestic mts. It is cone shaped and has concave slopes
The colima volcano magma composition The Colima volcano magma composition is andesitic magma. The volcano has silica content as the rock 50 -60% silica. You can find andesitic magma at oceancontinental subduction zone. Andesitic magma has medium viscosity that means the Colima can produce very massive explosion then can send large amounts of ash and debris.
Colima positives and negatives affecting people Positive The Colima can provide nutrients to the surrounding soil from the ash. Volcanic ash often contains minerals that are beneficial to plants, and if it is very fine ash it is able to break down quickly and get mixed into the soil. The Colima can create new islands and land. Negative: About 300, 000 people live near Colima Volcano, making it potentially one of the world's most dangerous volcanoes. Colima affect people in many ways. Some of the bad ways are that houses, buildings, streets can get covered with ash. Homes may not collapse. Some people leave their homes until their roofs get cleaned. If the ashfall is really heavy it can make it impossible to breathe. The Colima can destroy old habitat and crops. Last the volcano can kill people and other animals.
Is the Colima Volcano being monitored? The Colima Volcano is being monitored by scientist. They are monitoring the volcano with satellite data.
Is it possible to stop or slow or stop lava flow Rockfalls and small pyroclastic flows. Volcanic earthquakes increased and become more frequent at the volcano. Satellite data is an available method for checking the lava flow.
Is the Colima active, or dormant, or extinct The Colima Volcano is still active. It recently erupted in 2015.
