I. Background • • A) Containment - stopping the expansion of communism B) Japan - Like Germany, we begin rebuilding our old enemy o General Douglas Mac. Arthur - oversees USA occupation of Japan o Japanese swear off war in exchange for USA’s Protection o Now Japan puts all $$$ into industry (works well)
II. China • • A) 1920 s Civil War o Mao Zedong, leader of communist forces, vs. Nationalist Chiang Kaishek o Suspend civil war to fight Japan in WWII B) Post WWII - Civil War broke out again o USA Sends $2 Billion to Nationalist squander advantage through corruption/poor military planning → lose to Communists in 1949 § Nationalists Move to Taiwan § China’s Mao Zedong will be huge ally to Russia o “Peoples Republic of China” born

Korean War BIG PICTURE: 1950 -1953 Humans: o 33, 000 US Soldiers Killed, 100, 000 wounded o 4, 000 Chinese/Koreans killed/wounded Kim Il Sung (North) vs. Syngman Rhee (South) North invades South in 1950 o Truman believes that N is supported by Russia o USA believes Communism spreads to Japan if S Korea defeated o ***Truman gets authorization to fight from he United Nations not Congress*** o Truman convinces Congress that US is only leading “UN Police Action” and that this is “not a war” • • •
IV. How Korean War went down • • • A) Douglas Mac. Arthur - leads “police force” with S Korean forces, driving back N Korea to dividing line o Tries to unite Korea but disobeys Truman by getting too close to China B) China gets involved - killing many Americans o Mac. Arthur demands use of Atomic bomb against China o China and Russia are allies - would cause WWIII o Truman does not want world to end, instead Fires Mac. Arthur C) Eventually, US threatens use of Atomic Bomb against Korea to get N Korea to sign Armistice o War is still not over o Americans still stationed in Korea today just in case
