No longer is the idea of containment limited to the U. S. S. R and China but it grew to include any area that could be under the threat of communism.
Korea is Divided • After WWII Korea is divided at the 38 th parallel – North of the 38 th parallel was communist controlled politically by the Soviet Union – South of the 38 th parallel was democratic supported by the U. S.
Unification • Both North and South Korea want to Unify Korea but on their own terms – North wants to make it a unified communist country – South wants to make it a unified democratic country
The War • Invasion – June 25, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to unify the countries – Were the Soviets behind this • Truman believes that they are (He is wrong) • Kim Il-Sung asked for the support of the Soviets but he never received it • Truman petitions the UN for support – Soviet Union was protesting the UN because of China’s communist government not being allowed to participate in the UN – The UN votes unanimously to condemn the invasion and support South Korea
The War • Summer of 1950 – Mac. Arthur was able to push the North Koreans back behind the 38 th parallel – Mac. Arthur convinces Truman to let him free all of Korea so he pushes towards China – Mao, the Chinese leader warned Mac. Arthur to back off and when he didn’t China joined the war • Winter of 1950 and 1951 – Chinese push the U. S. back across the 38 th parallel – The war then turns into a brutal stalemate
The Firing of Mac. Arthur • Chinese enter the war – Truman decides not to free the whole country – Mac. Arthur disagrees – Truman was set on the idea of Limited War or keeping the fight confined to one area – Mac. Arthur openly criticizes Truman’s policies – Truman Fires Mac. Arthur for insubordination
The War’s End • July 1951 – Both sides meet to talk about peace in Korea – Fighting still continues for another two years • 1953 – Truce was signed between the two nations – Border was set at the cease fire line not far from the 38 th parallel
