The Korean War • During the 1920 s in China a revolution brought a communist party into power • The US opposed the communist government that came to power in China and never recognized the government
The Korean War • Japan had ruled Korea from 1910 to 1945 • After WWII the US and the Soviets split it into two countries and divided it along the 38 th parallel
The Korean War • Harry Truman ordered control of the military to General George Mac. Arthur • The Soviet Union provided North Korea with weapons • In the first attack North Korea pushed South Korea all the way back to the Port City of Pusan • At this port the UN forces were forced to set up a perimeter which became known as the Pusan Perimeter – This was a 140 mile defense line that held off the North Koreans
Korean War • Attack on Inchon – This was the first major offensive for the UN Forces – They attacked by the port city of Inch’on and were able to recapture the capital of Seoul – The North Korean forces were pushed all the way back to the Yalu river which is on the border of China • This forces the Chinese to enter on the North Korean side • This caused for a bitter stalemate between the two sides for the rest of the war
Korean War • Ending the Korean War – With China involved Mac. Arthur proposed that we go into full out warfare with China with the hopes of over throwing their Communist Government – Truman greatly opposed this idea – Truman and Mac. Arthur had severely different ideas and the conflict between each other ultimatly led to the removal of Mac. Arthur
Korean War • The election of 1952 – Truman decided not to run for re-election due to his decreased popularity – The Republican choose Dwight Eisenhower with a running mate of Richard Nixon – The Democrats choose Adlai Stevenson with a running mate of John Sparkman – Eisenhower was a landslide winner
The Korean War • The new president kept his main campaign promise of ending the War • He stepped up the bombing raids and even threatened the use of an atomic bomb • The end result was the same that had been established before the war which was two countries divided on the 38 th parallel
Red Scare • Communism in America – CIA- created by the US government to gather information about Russia and communism – House Un-American Activities Committee- HUAC questioned the political ties of members of peace organizations, liberal political groups, and labor unions – Hollywood Ten- A group of California film directors and writers who went to jail rather than answer the HUAC questions, then they were blacklisted
Mc. Carthyism • The head of this Red Scare was the Wisconsin senator Joseph Mc. Carthy • Mc. Carthy accused and questioned hundreds of government workers • Many reporters accused Mc. Carthy of just going on worthless witch hunts but very few ever challenged him
