CMS ECAL Endcap, EE The UK is responsible for - procurement of the mechanical structures for the detector - completing the detailed design and systems integration - procurement and testing of VPTs - design and procurement of the VPT HV system - assembly of 50% of the SCs CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 2
ECAL Crystals Urgent need to secure additional crystal producers to meet the CMS schedule for ECAL Barrel and Endcap installation. Potential mass production suppliers: Shanghai Institute of Ceramics (SIC) North Crystals (NC), Apatity, Murmansk Pre-production full sized ECAL Endcap samples SIC: 50 received Feb 2004 NC: 7 received May 2004 150 + 50 EB on order 3 more due soon Must ensure crystals meet CMS ECAL technical specifications, especially for radiation tolerance, before launching contracts UK leading the crystal appraisal work at the CERN H 4 ECAL test beam Programme of intense test beam irradiation and monitoring with purpose built supercrystals mounted on E 0’ CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 3
SIC Co 60 irradiation results 400 Gy in 1. 1 h Specification limit 1. 5 m-1 Induced absorption data for the SIC crystals - consistent with results from BCTP crystals CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 4
Crystal test beam appraisal with E 0’ Supercrystal in assembly jig with 15 SIC Endcap crystals for test beam appraisal 10 remaining pockets for BCTP crystals as control/comparison CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 5
Vacuum Photo-triodes (VPTs) 25. 4 mm VPT Production – good progress 7900 (51%) delivered Concerns: - anomalous devices, 6% of production Observations: - production about 4 months behind contracted delivery agreement. Not on critical path. CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 6
EE large mechanics Excellent progress. Large mechanics for first Endcap finished at TM, on schedule. • BP flat to 0. 4 mm across 3. 4 m • BP precision holes to within 50 m to neighbour CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 7
EE large mechanics Ring flanges Cooling and positional spacers 2 cast, machined and completed Load tested to 12. 75 t (versus 8 t in CMS) Deflection: 0. 4 mm at 12. 75 t in agreement with FEA Holes to within 250 -500 m, within request CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 8
Front-End Electronics Conversion to 0. 25 m electronics has been very successful! 25 channels ECAL Trigger Tower Test Beam October 2003 DE/E 1% 0. 5% Engineering run for DSM ASICS successful (enough for 3 SMs) Launch full production of electronics in mid-summer. Plan is to have a full Super. Module in beam by the end of September 2004. CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 9
EE electronics integration Remaining major UK design/procurement task Detailed design for the integration of electronics and services on the back of EE Progress: Mass production of 500 cooling bar castings commencing Mon May 17 Completion of castings End June 2004 CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 10
CMS planning, main dates of CMS V 34 P Bloch 27. 4. 04 Surface SX 5 installation of EB+ (and as many EB- as possible) Dec 2005 until January 15 th 2006 Underground UX 5 installation 1 (before Tracker) UX 5 installation 2 (after Tracker) CMS closed Pilot run End ECAL Endcap EE/SE+ installation EE/SE- Installation Physics run CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 May 2006 November 2006 April –June 2007 late Summer 2007 October 15 th –November 15 th 2007 March 2008 D. Crystal Planning P Bloch 27. 4. 04 Possible delivery profiles with 2 crystal suppliers, P Bloch 27. 4. 04 • Barrel crystal schedule → • End Cap crystal schedule → Total CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 10850 4150 15000 12
EE planning P Bloch 27. 4. 04 Need highly parallel production, good planning and preparation for 2006/7 CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 13
CMS EE Conclusions UK successfully undertaking its deliverables to CMS - VPT procurement, test and appraisal - large mechanics design and procurement - HV system design - Electronics integration Late EE crystal delivery THE major concern - SC mass production on hold CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 14
Additional info follows, next slide CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D. J. A. Cockerill - RAL 15
Impact on UK programme, late crystal delivery Good planning, preparation and parallel production will be needed for the assembly of 4 Dees in 2006/7 Use all the resources that will become available : UK SC assembly laboratory CERN ECAL barrel assembly team and infrastructure Possible technicians at CERN from Rome The separate CERN TA 1 group and CERN SC/Dee assembly laboratory Gain assembly experience beforehand • SC construction - will have ~ 250 EE crystals from this summer = 10 SCs - ‘SC challenge’ to show we can assemble 10 SCs per week • Test beam experience – integration of electronics, laser monitoring system • Dee pre-assembly experience of mechanical and cooling items, with CERN TA 1 group • Dee electrical looming prepared ahead of time CMS-UK Oversight Committee 17/5/04 D.
