The clock By Taylor Farley
Diagram Labeled time intervals (big numbers count 12 hours all the way around, five numbers in between each big one counts 60 minutes all the way around) Hands of the clock (small hand counts every hour, big hand counts every minute) Springs (drives the gear trains) Screws (holds parts together) Gears (drive the hands of the clock) Pendulum (counts seconds and helps drive the inner mechanism)
Energy transformations The energy transformations within a mechanical clock are kinetic (hand crank or pendulum) to mechanical (gears and springs) to kinetic (ticking hands of the clock , movement of gears, pendulum swing) Mechanical (gears and springs) Kinetic (gear train movement) Kinetic (ticking hands) Kinetic (pendulum swing)
The clock and simple machines The clock contains three simple machines: the Wheel and axle (the gear train) , the screw(holding the hands of the clock in place and other parts of the clock), and the lever (the hands of the clock and in some clocks, the pendulum). Screw Hands (lever) Screw Pendulum (lever) Gears (Wheel and axle)
Effort force Friction Driver Idler Friction Gravity Driven gear FORCE Effort force Normal Friction The two forces acting on the clock are friction(the gear train) and gravity( the movement of the pendulum)
Operating device Often power for the device is stored within it, for example a winding device that applies mechanical stress to an energy-storage mechanism such as a spring, thus involving some form of escapement; in other cases, hand power may be utilized. The use of wheels, whether linked by friction or gear teeth, to redirect motion or gain speed or torque. The tension in a wound spring powers a lever which transfers its momentum to a system of precisely engineered gears. These gears work the second, minute, and hour hands. A balance wheel keeps the “ticking” of the gears in a regular rhythm.
Improvement plan One way to improve the mechanical clock is to decrease the amount of friction within the inner mechanisms Another improvement would be to make the clock eco-friendly by creating the parts out of biodegradable and recyclable materials.
