What happened at Sumter • Union Major Robert Anderson was the commanding officer at fort Sumter. Told President Lincoln he had less than a five week supply of food. The confederate government starts to feel pressure that the war is inevitable. So they order Confederate General P. G. T Beurguard to order the evacuation of the union troops at fort Sumter. They say they will be starved out in a couple of days south said NO you need to leave now. North refuses south attacks and the battle ends it was a bloodless battle.
The first Battle of Bull Run or Manassas Junction • Was the first real battle • Both sides had a different name for the battle – The north called it bull run because of the nearby creek – The south called it Manassas junction for the nearby town • South would have lost without Gen Thomas. J Jackson – That’s were he got the nickname stonewall Jackson for his fighting style • First win for the southern army • Minimal casualties
The second Battle of Manassas Junction or Bull Run • Still couldn’t decide on a name • Larger in numbers and in scale • Part of confederate Gen Robert E Lee’s Offensive strike • South out numbered approx. 2 to 1 • Heavy casualties on both sides • Southern victory
The battle of Antietam or Sharpsburg • Bloodiest single day in American history • Still couldn’t decide on a name – North called Antietam for the creek – South called it Sharpsburg for the nearby town • There was no winner tactically • Lincoln took it as enough of a victory to state the emancipation proclamation • South outnumbered 2 to 1
The battle of Shiloh • Bloodiest battle in American history to that time • South came with the intention to wipe grants army out quickly and easily. • Lots of wounded and or missing • Union victory
