The Civil War Part 1
Fort Sumter April 12 1861 ¡Fort in Charleston South Carolina still loyal to the Union but surrounded by Confederacy ¡Lincoln notifies Confederates that he will resupply the fort, the Confederates open fire on the fort and capture it ¡This starts the fighting of the Civil War
Border States ¡States that have slavery but remained a part of the Union ¡The border states are vitally important to Lincoln and he actively works to keep them in the Union ¡Border States: West Virginia (Go Mountaineers!), Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, and Missouri
North vs. South ¡South had the best officers and were fighting a defensive war on their homeland ¡The North had almost all of the manufacturing, more weapons, better transportation, more supplies, and a navy ¡The Confederacy knows that if they can get a foreign ally they will be able to win the war ¡Confederates have all of the good officers
Battle of Bull Run July 21 st 1861 ¡First armed exchange between Union and Confederate soldiers ¡The Confederacy wins easily, Union soldiers realize it will be a long war
Antietam September 17 th 1862 ¡Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacks Union forces in Maryland ¡Despite having double the amount of soldiers Union General George Mc. Clellan cannot win a decisive victory
Union Generals ¡The Union Generals are too cautious and afraid to lose a major defeat despite having more soldiers ¡Lincoln struggles to find a good commander
Shiloh ¡In April of 1862 Confederate troops attacked general Grant by surprise nearly defeating him ¡Grant wins the battle after three days with a total of 23, 000 casualties
