Civil War � � � The Civil War was the bloodiest battle in American history that divided our country The Civil War was fought through 18611865 The war ended when Generals Lee and Grant met at Appomattox Court House
Union � President was Abraham Lincoln � General George B. Mc. Clellan was commander of the Union army 75, 000 troops North did not support slavery � �
Confederacy � � President was Jefferson Davis General was Robert E. Lee About half of as many troops as Union South dependent on slavery in order to pick cotton
Causes of the Civil War � � � States rights disputes had grown for years between the South and North Slavery was also a issue The North did not agree with slavery but it was the South way of life Protective tariffs on goods from Europe so that the south had to purchase goods from the North Sectionalism was the last cause when the country population grew, people started looking at it in sections
Disadvantages of the South � � � North had 4 million men of fighting age while the South had 1 million North had 80%of nations factories North could also transport weapons and supplies to soldiers quickly
Battles in Texas Battle of Galveston North had begun a blockade in order to keep supplies from getting to Galveston Federal troops occupied the city Texans carried a plan to retake the city by firing at Union ships Battle of Sabine Pass Union planned to attack Texas through Sabine Pass where 40 men stood at fort Cannons in the fort disabled Union ships and forced a retreat Battle of Laredo Union makes attempt to burn cotton factories Red River Campaign Union tried once more to invade Texas Troops moved up the Red River through a road in a forest Confederates defeated Union forces there in the battle of Mansfield
Blockade of Texas � Union wanted to stop supplies like weapons and food from getting to Confederate soldiers.
Texans Adapt to Blockade � � Many Texans were generous with their money; women gave up their jewelry, farmers donated grain and committees collected food and money for war efforts Texans also wore homemade clothes, used burnt okra instead of coffee and used earthen wear plates
Reconstruction � � Reconstruction-federal government plan to restore South after Civil War Freedman had many hardships during this time African Americans faced much violence from whites and many organizations formed to terrorize them The courts also could force any black to work if they were unemployed.
