The Civil Rights Movement was when people decided to take action against the inequalities in America. Both black and white people became involved in the major campaigns that began in the 1950’s.

What are some of the key words? • Segregation: the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment • De-segregation: to eliminate segregation • NAACP: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is an African. American civil rights organization in the United States, formed in 1909. • Unrest: a state of dissatisfaction, disturbance, and agitation in a group of people, typically involving public demonstrations or disorder.

What started the Civil Rights Movement? The Civil Rights Movement did not begin because of one particular event but due to a growing unrest caused by events such as: • Black Americans fighting for the USA in wars • The murder of Emmett Till • The change in laws to do with segregation

The impact of war on Black Americans One million black Americans served in the US armed forces during the Second World War Black Americans found themselves fighting for ‘Democracy and Freedom’ against the evil of Nazi Germany, and yet in their own country they were seen as second class citizens

The Fifties During the 1950’s four major events happened that aided the Civil Rights Movement these are: • Brown Vs Board of Education- 1954 • The murder of Emmett Till- 1955 • The Montgomery Bus Boycott- 1955 • Little Rock, Arkansas- 1957
