THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM transports oxygen and nutrients throughout
- Slides: 23
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM • transports oxygen and nutrients throughout the body • carries away wastes • made up of blood, the heart, and blood vessels.
what’s in red blood cells Nutrients from food white blood cells oxygen waste (urea) platelets carbon dioxide plasma hormones
Blood • It contains 4 parts: – Red blood cells – White blood cells – Platelets – Plasma Red Blood Cell White Blood Cell Platelets
Red Blood Cells • contain hemoglobin, which transports O 2 to organs and CO 2 away from organs
White Blood Cells • fight infection
Platelets • help blood clot
Plasma • Liquid which carries blood components
Blood Vessels • A network of tubes that carry blood • Contains 3 types of vessels 1. Arteries 2. Veins 3. Capillaries
The ARTERY Arteries - carry O 2 rich blood from the heart. Thick, muscular walls due to tremendous pressure. the thick muscle can contract to push the blood along. thick muscle and elastic fibres
Q: What’s the difference between a heart attack and a stroke? • Both are caused by an artery being blocked and blood not getting to an organ. • When blood cannot get to the heart muscle, the heart muscle starts to die – this is a heart attack. • When Blood cannot get to the brain, that portion of the brain starts to die – this is a stroke.
A person is complaining that they can’t feel their fingertips and can’t move their leg. They are also feeling very confused. Question: Is this person most likely having a heart attack or a stroke?
Answer: This person is having a stroke. The brain controls movements, feelings and thinking. Because blood, and therefore oxygen is not getting to their brain, that section of the brain is dying and can no longer do its job.
Read – Pair - Share 1. Pick a partner. 2. On pages 85 or 86, you will read about either Coronary Artery Disease or Heart Attacks, your partner will read the other. 3. Fill in one half of the Medical Facts Sheet with point form notes 4. Explain what you learned to your partner. Help you partner fill in the missing side of their notes.
Coronary Artery Disease and Heart Attacks Many conditions affect the function of the circulatory system. The most common heart problem is coronary artery disease, which can lead to a heart attack.
The CAPILLARY Capillaries - only one cell thick to enable gas and nutrient exchange.
The CAPILLARY A collection of capillaries is known as a capillary bed artery body cell vein capillaries
The VEIN Veins - have thin walls and carry blood back to the heart thin muscle red blood cell platelets valve white blood cell plasma
The Heart • Pumps blood around body • Nerve cells (pacemaker cells) send electrical signal to contract heart. • Human heart has 4 chambers. • Heart beat depends on oxygen needed by body
Animation Contraction animation Video of human heart
Blood Circulation 1. Right side of heart pumps blood to lungs 2. Diffusion of gases in lungs (O 2 in, CO 2 out) 3. Blood goes to left side of heart and pumps into arteries 4. Arteries get smaller and smaller until they are capillaries 5. In Capillaries, O 2 & nutrients diffuse into cells, CO 2 out. 6. Blood flows into veins into right side of heart.
