THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM THE THREE COMPONENTS THAT MAKE UP THE HUMAN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
What makes up the circulatory system?
The 3 components are: THE HEART THE BLOOD VESSELS THE BLOOD
The Function of the Circulatory System To deliver oxygen and nutrients to the entire body. Transportation system to remove waste products from the body.
Components of the circulatory system
Blood • Over half of our blood is Plasma: which carries hormones, nutrients and waste products. • Red Blood cells: primary job is to carry oxygen throughout the body • White blood cells: help fight infection and foreign invaders • Platelets: a solid in the blood that helps with blood clotting
Blood vessels • Are tubes that form a network to carry blood all throughout the body • Arteries: Carry oxygen rich blood away from the heart and to the rest of the body • Veins: Carry oxygen depleted blood back to the heart • Capillaries: tiny blood vessels are the sites where nutrients, oxygen and waste materials are exchanged between blood and body cells
Blood vessels Arteries are thick walled and can handle higher pressure than veins. Veins are thin walled vessels with low pressure.

Capillaries
Heart • Continually beating pumping blood throughout the body and into the lungs where blood picks up oxygen • The heart is a muscle about the size of your fist and sits behind the sternum (breastbone) • Heart beats on average 60 -80 times per minute at rest • The heart is the center of the circulatory system
Is the heart muscle the same as all our other muscles? For example, our bicep muscle in the arm?
Let’s get to work! • Squeeze the ball for 60 seconds • Count how many times you squeezed the ball in that 60 second time frame
Observations
Heart as a muscle • Do muscles fatigue? • Did your arm and hand muscles get tired? • How many times does the heart beat on average per minute? • The heart muscle is made up of unique cardiac muscle fibers that are not likely to fatigue
Common problems affecting the circulatory system
List a few problems of the circulatory system • High blood pressure (Hypertension) • Anemia • Atherosclerosis • Heart Attack
