The Circulatory System Jobs of the Circulatory System
The Circulatory System
Jobs of the Circulatory System: 1. To take oxygen, food & water to all of the cells in the human body. 2. To take waste products away from cells. 3. To help fight infection.
6 Parts of the Circulatory System: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Heart Lungs Arteries (Red) Veins (Blue) Capillaries Blood
1. The Heart • The heart is a pump that pushes blood throughout your entire body.
Heart Continued • Your heart is the size of your fist.
Heart Continued • Below is a close up picture of a heart valve. • Heart sounds are made by heart valves as they open and close.
2. The Lungs • The lungs give oxygen to your blood and take carbon dioxide away from your blood.
3. Arteries • Arteries are tubes that carry blood AWAY from the heart.
Arteries Continued
4. Capillaries • Capillaries are very thin tubes that connect arteries to veins. • Capillaries are only one cell thick! • Capillaries release food and oxygen from the blood into cells. • Capillaries also take waste products like carbon dioxide from cells.
Artery Capillaries Vein
5. Veins • Veins carry blood back to the heart and lungs. • Veins carry blood with waste products such as carbon dioxide.
Veins Continued
6. Blood • Blood is a liquid that carries nutrients, water, oxygen and waste products to and from every cell in your body. • Blood travels through thousands of miles of blood vessels (arteries, veins, & capillaries).
Blood Continued • Blood is made of four main parts: – Red Blood Cells – White Blood Cells – Platelets – Plasma
Blood Continued: Red Blood Cells • Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to all the cells of the body. • Takes carbon dioxide and transports it back to the lungs • There are 5, 000 Red Blood Cells in ONE drop of blood!
Blood Continued: White Blood Cells • White Blood Cells protect the body from germs • These cells attack and destroy germs when they enter the body
Blood Continued: Platelets • Platelets are blood cells that help stop bleeding
Blood Continued: Plasma • Plasma is the liquid part of the blood • About half of your blood is made of plasma • The plasma carries the blood cells throughout the body • Plasma is 90% water.
