The circle of life All living things have a life cycle. Life cycles enable life to continue from one generation to the next. Organisms go through a series of changes during their life cycle, from when they are formed to maturity. When an organism is mature it can reproduce and a new life cycle begins. Most life cycles have three main stages: egg, juvenile (young) and adult. Within these stages the organism will grow, develop, mature and reproduce. In some life cycles metamorphosis occurs.

Life cycles Butterfly The statements describe stages of the life cycle of a butterfly. They are not in the correct order. What is the correct order for the statements? A Eggs are laid and larvae develop. D Metamorphosis occurs and a butterfly emerges. B A chrysalis forms around the pupa. E The caterpillar feeds and grows, then moults by shedding its exoskeleton. The same but different Some children talk about the life cycles of four different organisms. Chris I’m not sure if a horse has a metamorphic life cycle. Some horses grow a lot, and the colour of the foal can sometimes be different to the adult. Paula I think ladybirds have a metamorphic life cycle. The larvae look similar to caterpillars. They curl up and cover themselves in a layer of skin before they turn into adult ladybirds. They look very different to the larvae. Asim I am sure a frog has a metamorphic life cycle. Tadpoles look totally different to frogs. Iona I’m not sure if moths have a metamorphic life cycle…. . how would I be able to tell?
