Cycles of Abuse Cycle of Sin Abuse Sin
Cycle of Abuse • The cycle of abuse is a social cycle theory developed in 1979 by Lenore E. Walker to explain patterns of behavior in an abusive relationship. • She also founded the Domestic Violence Institute, which conducts research on family violence. Lenore has been instrumental in the design and development of policy, training programs, and legislative reform and frequently testifies as an expert witness in legal actions involving abused persons.
Historical Definitions: Domestic mid 17 th century: from medieval Latin domesticat- ‘belonging to the house’ (see domestic). Abuse: abnormal unintended use of object, theory, words, or actions to cause harm or for some nefarious purpose (Laundry Pods Challenge- Wash Cloths –Abuse Eating) to measure its technological/ viral impact. Traditional Context • Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior which involves violence or other abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation. Extended Context • Domestic violence can also involve violence against children, parents, or the elderly, and may be done for selfdefense. Church Context Tragically, studies reveal that spousal abuse is just as common within the evangelical churches as anywhere else. This means that about 25 percent of Christian homes witness abuse of some kind.

What does the bible say: 2 Timothy 3: 1 -8 ESV But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. . Colossians 3: 21 ESV Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Generational & Biblical Tale Ephesians 4: 29 -32 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Why is the tale of Absalom important in the biblical context to domestic violence? Deceived the people ( Brothers-Sister-Father) Joab, the king's commander. Joab, accustomed to avenging himself, took this opportunity to even the score with Absalom. [12] Absalom once had Joab's field set on fire
Personal Tale ( Father ) Physical Mother ( Drugs) Generational ( Combination of ALL) How does domestic violence become the norm? • Functional Chaos • This Is How We Do Things • Fear • Control • Apathy • Depression • Trauma How those who have experienced ( overt or covert levels of domestic violence) rebuild and break the cycle? • Tell Someone ( Parent or Loved Ones, Counselor, Trusted Friend, Pastor, or community liaison) • Consciously evaluate your own method of leadership, parenting, or your role in relationship with your companion.
Closing -while the phrase ignorance is bliss is so cliché there is a measure of both truth and accountability Truth – in that he or she may truly be ignorant as to how their overt or covert instances of abuse cause hurt or harm Accountability , filing proper reports, in informing those who do and properly advising them both verbally and in writing as to the nature
The Church Response: Remember Hurt People: Encourage Consistently Remain Positive Remember All Negatives have a equalizer, Remain Calm Listen Communicate, Participate in Trauma Informed Care / Counseling Involve & Report When Necessary Support scriptures to thwart and redirect cycles of sin and abuse. The bible is the richest super food so- if I had to choose two power foods from the bible when counseling someone or encountering any form of domestic violence those would be: John 3: 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Matthew 7: 11 • If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
