The Chinese New Year Story Emperor Jade wanted to measure time. He asked all the animals to line up and told them that the first 12 animals that finished the race would have a year named after them. First the rat finished the race and so the first year was named after the rat. Next it was the ox and then the tiger and then the rabbit. Taking fifth place was the dragon and then the sly snake because he tricked the horse by scaring him. After a raft came carrying the goat the rooster and the monkey. They all worked as a team. So the Emperor named the goat as the 8 th year, the monkey as the 9 th and the rooster as the 10 th. The next animal was the dog and the last was the pig. The cat never got a year because he came last and that is why Chinese people believe that cats and rats do not get along because the rat pushed the cat into the water! Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig This year it is the Year of the Ox. The Ox’s year starts on the 12 th February 2021!
