The Cherwell School Planning for September Year 7 moving into Year 8 Monday 13 th July 6 pm Please note that these slides are designed to be used in conjunction with the recorded webinar
Thank you… “We appreciate all the fantastic support we have been given by all of our parents and carers during this time. We know it hasn’t been easy for you and your children. We hope you do get a good summer break and we are prepared and ready to welcome all of our students back from Thursday 3 rd September” Chris Price Headteacher
Black Lives matter “We will bring this directly and explicitly into the heart of our work this year. We recognise that recent events have drawn attention to a variety of longer term issues that resonate with all institutions including schools. For us a key area is to review our curriculum to make sure that it reflects best practice in relation to inclusivity and diversity. We recognise this is something that needs to engage all our stakeholders rather than something that happens in isolation” The Cherwell School
Planning for September : Government guidelines “It is our plan that all pupils, in all year groups, will return to school fulltime from the beginning of the autumn term”. https: //www. gov. uk/government/publications/actions-for-schoolsduring-the-coronavirus-outbreak/guidance-for-full-opening-schools “Running as close as we can to normal as safely as possible” The Cherwell School
Our long-standing themes are guiding us… • Opportunity • Responsibility • Excellence
Our Priorities are still the most important ones • Curriculum • Teaching • Behaviour • Wellbeing
Assessing risk: • Year group bubbles • Staggered arrivals/departures • Enhanced hygiene • Cleaning regime • Reshaped rooms • Immediate reaction to symptoms
Summer learning and homework • Allow students the opportunity to continue with structured learning • Provide structured work to complete at home during the end of this term and before the start of next term • Give greater confidence for starting their courses next term • Allow opportunity to explore beyond the curriculum in ways that will also link to their study next term
What is the tone / shape of the HW? • Most subjects at KS 3 will engaging HW around the basic structure of: a) Something to read b) Something to watch c) Something to explore or think about Subject leaders will set the work with a view to focussing the content around a key idea or concept to be taught next year All of this will be explained to students via their teachers before the end of term
Starting in September: What will stay the same… • Curriculum to run as intended • Pastoral system as normal • Timetabling and deployment of staff as intended • The idea of tutor time followed by 5 lessons happening in the same time slots across the school (as usual) • Break and Lunch happening simultaneously across the school as normal • School calendar planned and delivered as normal
Starting in September : What will feel different? • The start and end of the day being staggered for students leading to different lengths of time for students in tutor time and in period 5 • “Zoning” of the school into Year Group specific “bubbles” • A shorter lunchbreak and “no canteen” –Lunch will be either packed lunch from home or ordered directly from Caterlink • Final details to follow in our communication on Friday 21 st August

Support: Additional Funding for Schools • More details from government to follow • The school is appointing additional teachers from September to help us
Support: National Tutoring Programme • Government-funded initiative to support schools to address the impact of Covid-19 school closures on pupils’ learning • Schools have access to subsidised tutoring from an approved list of tuition partners • Coaches will work in schools and be trained in our school principles for teaching and learning and the curriculum • We have the flexibility to see how this best fits into the needs of our students and the school day
Teaching and Learning: Our response to COVID-19 We know that students need a broad curriculum and rich curriculum that should not be reduced. We know how students learn and what we need to provide in the classroom to make the most of opportunities to learn. Our key focus for our Teaching training 2020 -2021 is “teaching with clarity”
Induction We want students to feel at home as soon as possible and so the first few days will be spent making sure that they feel confident and knowledgeable about the expectations we have of them and what to do if they have a problem. Familiarise themselves with the new site • Meet their teachers • Make friends • Meet their classmates • Learn our new routines
“September Start” meetings • These meetings happen in the week beginning 14 th September and are an opportunity for you to meet your child’s form tutor as well as attend other presentation to help you understand aspects of the school and aid your child’s learning. • This will be an early chance to discuss with your child’s tutor any concerns you may have, relevant personal information that would be helpful for them to know, best methods of communication and anything else you feel would help them support your child in school.
“September Start” meetings: Progress Reviews – PR 1 September 2020 • We would normally report to parents at the end of term 6 in July – we have chosen to move this to September • In order to report to parents on the period of the school closure we are asking all teachers to enter progress review data before the end of the school year so we can publish this to parents early in September • Part of this follow up will be in the “September Start” meeting in the week beginning 14 th September
Extra Curricular activities Not “can’t dos” just “do differently” Sport Music Academic Societies Performance Creative Strategic Leadership Adventurous
How to join Clubs • We recommend that every student joins at least one club as it is a great way to expand their interests and friendship group. • We have a brochure of extra curricular activities on a website and can give hard copies if necessary – students simply need to turn up to the club to join, or if they are nervous to do this their form tutor or year leader will help them to join.
