Bellringer #8 – TURN IN ALTERNATE ENDINGS • Record the following definitions in your lit terms dictionaries, then INDIVIDUALLY complete the worksheet I gave you: • Connotation: an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning. • Example: Youthful (Positive connotation), Childish (Negative connotation) • Denotation: The literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests. • Example: Ben is adventurous (Courageous)

Write these on the back of your Bellringer worksheet. • Odd seat #’s – Positive Connotations • Even seat #’s – Negative Connotations • 1 “odd” and 1 “even” partner up and share out when you have finished writing.

Question #1 • "It would be no good charging that sort of price for a love potion, for example. Young people who need a love potion very seldom have five thousand dollars. Otherwise they would not need a love potion. " • What does the old man mean by this statement? Explain why he thinks young people who have five thousand dollars already would not need a potion to find love.

Question #2 • "She will want to know all you do, " said the old man. "All that has happened to you during the day. Every word of it. She will want to know what you are thinking about, why you smile suddenly, why your are looking sad. " • "That is love!" cried Alan. • Do you agree with Alan – is it love if the girl behaves this way toward him? Why or why not? •

Question #3 • "I like to oblige, " said the old man. "Then customers come back, later in life, when they are better off, and want more expensive things. • What do you think the “more expensive things” are that the old man speaks of?

Question #4 • "Maybe it will clean gloves. I have never tried. One might call it a life-cleaner. Lives need cleaning sometimes. " • Explain what the underlined statement means. Do you agree or disagree with it? Explain your reasoning.

Question #5 • What are some of the beliefs you can identify in this story? What are the values? Create a list.
