The Cell cycle

The Cell Cycle • INTERPHASE (Involves two growth phases and a synthesis phase) •

The Cell Cycle • INTERPHASE (Involves two growth phases and a synthesis phase) • Period of intense synthesis and growth. • It manufactures new cell organelles eg. mitochondria (which will be needed when 2 new cells are eventually formed). • During synthesis phase, replication of DNA occurs • MITOSIS Separation of chromosomes (DNA material) and their redistribution into new nuclei. • CELL DIVISION Division of the cytoplasm (cytokinesis).

Cell cycle The length of the cycle depends on cell type and conditions (food,

Cell cycle The length of the cycle depends on cell type and conditions (food, O 2, temp. ) Eg. bacterial cells 20 mins. intestinal wall cells 8 – 10 hrs. onion root cells 20 hrs. nerve cells never (although all cells have the potential to divide some lose the ability) interphase Cell cycle mitosis cytokinesis

The role of the cell cycle • To increase the number of genetically identical

The role of the cell cycle • To increase the number of genetically identical cells • For asexual reproduction • To repair damaged tissues • To control the cells division – to control mitosis. • Cells specialise after cell division to differentiate into tissues

Suggest how the cell cycle will be affected in cells that have become cancerous

Suggest how the cell cycle will be affected in cells that have become cancerous • • Shorter G phase Faster cycle Cell divides uncontrollably Cell do not become specialised

Cell, tissues and organs • Tissues – are formed out of similar cells that work together for a particular function • Organs – made up of several tissues (so several cell types) that work together for one or more functions
