French Colonialism • In the 1800 s the French had a colony in Southeast Asia which included Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam into one French colony known as French Indochina • The French used Vietnam for its rubber and rice.
Vietnam Rebels • In 1946 Ho Chi Minh led the Viet Minh in a revolution against their French rulers. • The U. S. decided to give aid to France.
Why Did the U. S. decide to help France? • The U. S. was in a cold war with the Soviet Union which was communist. • Ho Chi Minh was a communist. • The U. S. believed in the Domino theory, where if one country became communist the rest would follow suit.
The Geneva Conference • In 1954 France and Viet Minh signed a treaty at the Geneva conference which split Vietnam into a communist North Vietnam and anti-communist South Vietnam.
Communist Uprising and U. S. Military Involvement • In the South an uprising occurred with support from the Viet Minh with soldiers and supplies. • The U. S. sent money and American advisors to help the South Vietnam regime fight back against the uprising. • North Vietnam fired on an American ship in the Gulf of Tonkin. • After the attack on the American ship the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was signed by congress allowing the U. S. to use their military in Vietnam.
