The Church ¡ Christianity became the universal faith of almost all of the people of Europe. ¡ Catholic Church the most important and most powerful organization in Western Europe.

When they died, many nobles left land to the Church hoping that would help them get into heaven. This made the Church the LARGEST LANDOWNER! Tithes (Church taxes) also increased the Church’s wealth

Monks: men who lived in monasteries, or small communities of religious workers. l devoted their lives to prayer l Monasteries produced many well-educated men prepared to serve as administrators for uneducated kings and lords. l Monks were responsible for keeping the Greek and Latin “classical” cultures alive. Monks copied books by hand in an era before the printing press. Though few in number, monks played a significant role in the Middle Ages.
