The Church ¡ Christianity became the universal faith of almost all of the people of Europe. ¡ Catholic Church the most important and most powerful organization in Western Europe.

Why the most powerful? ¡ ¡ ¡ People believed the Church had the power to send a person to heaven or hell. When they died, many nobles left land to the Church hoping that would help them get into heaven. This made the Church the LARGEST LANDOWNER! Tithes (Church taxes) also increased the Church’s wealth

Why the most important? The clergy were usually the only people who could read and write and they were very useful to rulers at all levels. ¡ The Church was often the only way to get an education. ¡ l It also allowed poor people to escape a dreary life and possibly rise to power.

Who are the clergy? l l ¡ Religious workers are called clergy. In the Middle Ages, the Pope ruled the Christian Church. Other clergy included bishops, priests, nuns, and monks. Monks: men who lived in monasteries, or small communities of religious workers. l devoted their lives to prayer l Monasteries produced many well-educated men prepared to serve as administrators for uneducated kings and lords. l Monks were responsible for keeping the Greek and Latin “classical” cultures alive. Monks copied books by hand in an era before the printing press. Though few in number, monks played a significant role in the Middle Ages.

Pope Urban II calls for a Crusade – a war to recapture Jerusalem from the Muslims Knights hoped to gain wealth and land Pope wanted to increase his power and perhaps to reunite the Roman and Byzantine Churches Peasants and serfs wanted to gain wealth and earn their freedom
