FIRST INPUT What is Carbon? An element The basis of life on earth Found in rocks, oceans, atmosphere, and all living organisms.

Carbon Cycle The same carbon atoms are used over and over again on earth. They cycle between the earth and the atmosphere.

Plants Use Carbon Dioxide Plants pull carbon dioxide (CO 2) from the atmosphere. Using sunlight with the CO 2 they make glucose. This process is called photosynthesis. The carbon can be used by the plant (food) and used to build the plant (cellulose). Plants also give off CO 2 from cellular respiration.

Animals Eat Plants When organisms eat plants, they take in the carbon and some of it becomes part of their own bodies. They generate CO 2 from cellular respiration (break down of glucose) and exhale this CO 2 into the atmosphere.

Animals Eat Animals When organisms eat animals, they take in the carbon and some of it becomes part of their own bodies. They generate CO 2 from cellular respiration (break down of glucose) and exhale this CO 2 into the atmosphere.

Plants and Animals Die When plants and animals die, most of their bodies are decomposed and carbon atoms are returned to the atmosphere. (CO 2) Some are not decomposed fully and end up as underground deposits (oil, coal, etc. = fossil fuels=Carbon)

Carbon Slowly Returns to the Atmosphere Carbon in rocks and underground deposits is released very slowly into the atmosphere. This process takes many years.

Carbon in Oceans Additional carbon is stored in the ocean. CO 2 passes into the water from the atmosphere. Plants & phytoplankton use CO 2 for photosynthesis. Many animals pull carbon from water to use in shells, etc. Animals die and carbon substances are deposited at the bottom of the ocean. Oceans contain earth’s largest store of carbon.

Burning Wood and Fossil Fuels Releases carbon compounds in air, water, and soil * one gallon of gas burned in a car=19 lbs of CO 2 (Who Killed the Electric Car, 2004)

Cycle – Repeats Over and Over …

Human Impact Fossil fuels release carbon stores very slowly Burning anything releases more carbon into atmosphere — especially fossil fuels Increased carbon dioxide in atmosphere increases global warming Fewer plants mean less CO 2 removed from atmosphere

What We Need to Do Burn less, especially fossil fuels Promote plant life, especially trees

What you will do in the activity - Move the desks within the classroom to create five desk-islands. These islands will be the carbon “tanks”: Athmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere, Biosphere (animals), Biosphere (plants). - Write the name of each tank on paper and place it on the desks.

What you will do in the activity THEN we will use some Materials: - skein of wools of different colours; - skein of thicker wool, red; - scissors and scotch tape; - A 4 white paper sheets;

What we have to do Think of some natural processes that connect one tank to another by transferring carbon. Each time you find a link, connect the two tanks with some wool thread and attach a sign (using paper, scissors and scotch tape) that explains the reason of the link. Focus on the natural processes only, avoiding the links generated by human activity.

How will we do it ? For the moment we will not use the red wool. We will use green, black and grey wool. Processes that don’t include the implication of living creatures, e. g. volcano eruptions. (grey wool) Decomposition processes (green wool) Processes that involve living creatures (black wool)
