What is a Community Coalition? “A coalition is a formal [voluntary] agreement and collaboration between groups or sectors of a community (neighbors, organizations and public and private institutions) in which each group retains its identity but all agree to work together through a community building process toward a common goal of building a safer and healthier community. ” (CADCA) Community Coalition in Honduras Community Coalition in Dominican Republic 4

Drug-Free Communities Program The U. S. government has invested in more than 2, 000 coalitions in the DFC program since it began in 1998. Currently, the U. S. has 719 DFC Grantees. CADCA was the driving force behind the passage of this program and is the primary training and technical assistance provider for the program. 10

CADCA has developed a global network of 305 community coalition in 27 countries around the world CADCA assists government, non-government organizations and community groups in developing effective community coalitions to prevent and reduce rates of illicit drug use. 12
