In the Middle Ages, Slavs from Russia migrated to present-day Poland the Czech and Slovak republics. The Balkans were populated by Slavs and other ethnic groups. The Byzantine Empire, Russia, and Eastern Europe C. Three Early Kingdoms Develop 1. A hundred years after the introduction of Roman Catholicism to the West Slavs, the first king of Poland was crowned. In 1386, Poland-Lithuania was the largest European state. It then declined because of a weak central government and at one point completely disappeared. During the Middle Ages, the Magyars ruled Hungary. When the king was forced to recognize the rights of nobles, his power was limited. Soon the Mongols invaded and the Ottoman Turks took control. The Serbs set up their own state in the late 1100 s.
