The Grimm Family �Philipp and Dorothea Grimm �Eight sons and one daughter. �Friedrich, Jacob, Wilhelm, Carl, Ferdinand, Ludwig, Friedrich, Charlotte and Georg. �Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm �Later known as the Brothers Grimm.
How They Started �At the ages of 13 and 14, Jacob and Wilhelm move to Kassel. �Both attend the University of Marburg, at the ages of 17 and 19. �Studied law. �Began to collect folktales in the early 1800’s.
About Their Stories �Dorothea Viehman and two Huguenot families told the brothers tales. �Jacob and Wilhelm held different interests regarding folktales. �More than just collecting fairy tales and folk legends. �They had a favorite local storyteller named Marie Muller.
More About Their Stories �Publish first collection in 1812. �Contains 86 folktales. �Two years later, a second volume is published. �Adds 70 more folktales. �In another two years, two volumes of Deutsche Sagen is published.
Following the Stories �Brothers receive honorary doctrates. �Wilhelm marries. �Both begin work at the University of Göttingen. �Joined in protest against King Ernest Augustus of Hanover. �Moved back to Kassel. �Accept jobs at the University of Berlin.
More About Jacob �Born January 4, 1785, in Hanau, Germany. �Studied law out of duty, not because he loved it. �Director of the Westphalian king’s private library. �Also the auditor of the Council of State.
Grimms Law �Named after Jacob Grimm �Also known as the First Germanic Sound Shift. �The first non-trivial systematic sound change to be discovered in linguistics. �Deutsche Grammatik, formulated the law as a general rule.
More About Wilhelm �Born February 24, 1786, in Hanau, Germany. �During four years of high school, suffered scarlet fever attacks and asthma. �Confined to bed for half a year, health became worse. �Studied Norse literature on his own.
