Providing a Way to Offer Choices
Looking Outside the Box • Continuing to push Person-Centered approach. • Looking for opportunities to go somewhere other than activities in and around town. • Wanting to give each individual the chance to take ownership in program wide decisions.
Giving Our Residents a Voice • Met with ICF and HCS residents to see what they wanted to do. • Fielded suggestions on what kind of vacation everyone wanted. • Top 3 suggestions and put to a group vote.
Top 3 Suggestions and a Decision • The 3 most suggested outings: – Staying in Dallas (shopping, Six Flags, etc. ) – Camping – Galveston • Group vote picked Camping – Hamburger cookout, campfire with s’mores, fishing, going to the lake
Planning Our Trip
Picking a Location • Researched locations that fit desired needs – Required space for: • 27 individuals • 10 staff – Provide opportunities for requested and recommended activities. – Available within desired time frame.

Gathering Individual Input • Met with individuals to get feedback on selected vacation venue. • Discussed options for activities while camping. • Fielded questions about what could be done while at Broken Bow.
Meeting Individual Needs • Cabin / Room assignments for Individuals • Staff coverage – Select staff from volunteer list – Staff cabin assignments • Medications – Med pass – Storing medications
Lessons Learned and Experiences Gained
Transportation • Caravan from Longview to Broken Bow – 4 vans for individuals and staff – 2 vehicles for supplies and luggage • 2 ½ hour drive north to Oklahoma
Activities • Duckboat Tours • Water balloon fight • Fishing • Hamburger Cookout • Campfire with s’mores

Staff Feedback • Fielded responses from staff after the vacation – Needed a designated lead while in Oklahoma. – More defined staff roles / responsibilities. – Better transportation options. – Too many supplies purchased.
Resident Feedback • Fielded responses from staff after the vacation – Want even more activities! – Wanting to go again. – Given more of a say in cabin / room assignments. – Most importantly, it was a lot of fun!
