Many types of geography Despite there being numerous types of geography we will focus on two.
Physical geography Physical Geography: the study of the world’s physical features- its landforms, bodies of water, climates, soils and plants.
Uses of Physical geography The earth has millions of physical features. Physical geography studies each of them and the effect they have on the world’s various landscapes. Examples: What causes volcanoes to erupt? How should and can people prepare? How does the flooding of a river provide both danger and benefits to small villages? In what way can people prepare to be safe and top benefit?
Human Geography Human geography: the study of the world’s people, communities, and landscapes.
Uses of human geography Human geography analyzes how people in various places address their needs. What kind of foods they eat. Their different governments and the choices made by humans. Examples: Why did the first settlers of North America migrate to Meso-America? Why do people who live in different parts of the United States have different slangs and accents.
Work Time: Group A: Create a list of the various items that are studied in physical geography Group B: Why do you think it is important to study people as a part of geography? Construct a list of reasons why human geography is important. Group C: Which branch of geography is more important. Develop a logical argument to prove your side.
