A New Beginning After the death of the people closest to her, Liesel had moved in with Ilsa Hermann. She had gotten closer to Ilsa and considered her more of a mother figure. Not only did Ilsa adopt Liesel and raise her as her own, but she also invited Max Vandenberg to live with her too to comfort Liesel after the terrifying events that had occurred in Liesel's early teen years. Liesel returned to a fancy private school, glad that she had no longer had to deal with the daily reminder of Rudy and could forget about her abusive former teacher. 2
A Sense of Forgiveness Liesel still had a problem with letting go of the though Rudy no longer being there. She had frequent nightmares after losing her best friend and is haunted of thought of Rudy must have felt like while everything was happening and how he really felt about her. She had blamed herself numerous times for the death of her best friend and had became depressed soon after her lost. After time, she became focused in school to forget about everything. She had always kept the thought of Rudy in mind, not grieving of the fact he is gone, but of the memories they shared. She knew he would want her to be happy. Nobody can ever replace Rudy Steiner. 3
Something to begin with During her junior year of high school, Liesel had found herself to be intrigued by a classmate. “Who is he? ” She wondered. All she knew was that he was a senior and he was in the majority of her honors classes. She thought he looked familiar but she had never seen the face before. His actions, his personality, the way he talked, all seemed so familiar, but who was he? Liesel had spend hours, days, weeks trying to figure out why he had stuck out like a sore thumb but she couldn't think of anything until one day, as there connection grew stronger, she had accidentally blurted out “What are you looking at, Saukerl? ” She come to realize, that he was just like Rudy. She found her best friend, in another person. How can this be? Rudy was unique and irreplaceable! 4
First of Two Liesel had become more and more interested in Augustus (Rudy's “replacement”). She had tried her best to become closer to him, sitting next to him in class and at lunch, slipping small conversations in between classes, and even asking to hang out after school. She wanted to know what she was missing out on with Rudy being gone. She had been romantically interested in Rudy and became the same way with Augustus. She wanted to kiss him, and for him to be hers. 5
Another Heartbreak By trying to imagine how everything used to be with Rudy, she began pushing Augustus away. She tried recreating memories that her and Rudy shared instead of creating new ones with Augustus wanted to party and have fun and live his final year, as a senior. He felt as if Liesel was holding him back because she had wanted to do the same things over and over. He wanted to venture out and live life while he still has it. He wanted to be able to get up one day and do as he please, but Liesel didn’t allow that. She housed him in. She feared loosing him, her best friend. She didn’t want to have to deal with another heartbreak, but by trying to prevent it, that is exactly what she did. Soon enough, Augustus got tired and right before summer vacation, Augustus had decided to break it off with Liesel. Never did she expect to have her best friend leave again. 6
Pursuit of Happiness After high school graduation, Liesel still didn't know what to do. She still felt as if she had been missing something. Without a second thought, Liesel had bought a ticket to Sydney, Australia in attempt to seek happiness. There, she managed to get a college degree in literature and became a writer, publishing books, after books. 7
Something Different In her graduating year of college, Liesel had met a young man named Mitchell. They had gone out for 5 years and on their 5 th anniversary, he had proposed! They lived together, happily in love and had 4 children, Vivian, Jackson, Jamison, and Valerie. 8
The Struggle Unfortunately happiness doesn’t stay forever. It comes and goes as it pleases. Liesel had become ill with renal failure and was in grievous need of a kidney. She was in dire pain and had to live in the hospital for months at a time. 9
Struck with Reality Even with all the treatment and the new kidney, Liesel was not doing well. She had gotten worse instead of better. Her body rejected the kidney and did not react well to the treatment, it was all over. When given her two week notice, Liesel had decided that she want to be brought home. She hadn’t wanted to die in a hospital, surrounded by beeps and “code blues”, she wanted to be with the ones she loved and in the comfort of her own home. 10
The Death of us All The book thief had been defeated. She is now welcomed into the afterlife, and waiting for her at the gates of heaven are Rosa, Hans, Max and her dear friend Rudy. She meets all of her life goals and at peace with herself and the world. She become well known in the book writing career, selling best sellers and becoming Author of the Year numerous times. She had never imagined that although the first score of her life had nothing but misery, she had been able to end life happily. 11
