Chapter 10 -12 Outline Introduction (10: 1 – 11: 1) Body (11: 2 – 12: 4) Conclusion (12: 5 -13)
Chapter 10 Outline Introduction (10: 1) Daniel’s mourning (10: 2 -3) Daniel’s weakness (10: 4 -17) Daniel’s strength (10: 18 -21)
Chapter 10 10: 1 – Daniel (Bel-te-shazzar, 1: 7) receives a revelation of a great warfare c. 536 B. C. (Jews return and rebuild) 10: 2 -3 – Daniel fasts and mourns for three weeks; the vision was not of a happy future, but one of persecution
Chapter 10 10: 4 -9 – Daniel is by the side of the River Hiddekel (Tigris) and sees a great vision of a man (angelic messenger, v. 11) whose appearance is spectacular; this vision causes Daniel to become weak
Chapter 10 10: 10 -14 – The man that Daniel sees is sent to help Daniel understand the revelation and vision of the “great warfare” (10: 1)
Chapter 10 10: 13 – This man was previously hindered from helping Daniel because of a spiritual battle with the “prince” of Persia (angel) until he is helped by Michael (Dan. 12: 1 Jude 9; Rev. 12: 7); spiritual warfare is taking place behind the scenes (see 10: 20 -21)
Chapter 10 10: 14 – Daniel will be made to understand what would happen to Israel in “the latter days” – the days covering the fall of Persia to Greece and the fall of Greece to Rome (see 11: 27, 35, 40; 12: 4, 6 -9, 13; comp. 2: 28; 8: 17 -19); the “vision” is chap. 11
Chapter 10 10: 15 -17 – Daniel explains that he has no strength 10: 18 -19 – Daniel is strengthened and encouraged to be strong
Chapter 10 10: 20 – Daniel is told that the man (angel) would fight Persia, c. 539 -331 B. C. (Ezra, Esther, Nehemiah) and Greece would then come, c. 331 -63 B. C. (note: at this time, Greece is not a world empire)
Chapter 10 10: 21 – Daniel is told that these coming events are written down as truth and Michael is helper 11: 1 – The man (angel) who appeared to Daniel had earlier strengthened Darius the Mede in 539 B. C.
Lessons for Today God’s word is always “true” and “truth”; regarding past, present, and future events (10: 1, 21) Daniel actively pursued a spiritual life: prayer, fasting, understanding, truth (10: 3, 16)
Lessons for Today Daniel was “greatly beloved” (10: 11, 19) Daniel set his heart to understand God’s will (10: 12) God hears and answers the prayers of the humble (10: 12; see 9: 20)
Lessons for Today We need to be spiritually strong as God’s will unfolds for his people; not fearing, but at peace (10: 19) A real battle “behind the scenes” is going on by real angels in the spirit realm (Eph. 6: 12 -13; Rev. 12: 7)
Lessons for Today God rules in the affairs of nations; raising them up and putting them down; God’s people will be affected by these national changes
