It was mainly the Bubonic Plague caused by bacteria in the stomach of a flea that lived on the blood of rats. When the rats died they found new hosts in humans. Why did the Black Death spread so quickly? 1. Crowded ports and towns meant people lived close together. 2. People knew nothing about contagious diseases so did not protect themselves. 3. Once the Bubonic plague infected someone they could spread the pneumonic form of the plague, spread by coughing. 4. Bad disposal of the bodies (no protection for the workers) 5. Shallow graves meant body parts were dug up by animals and so the disease spread further 6.
