The Bill Of Rights The first 10 amendments to the Constitution
The 1 st Amendment • Freedom of: – Religion – Assembly – Press – Petition – Speech
nd 2 Amendment • The right to bear arms
rd 3 Amendment • No quartering of troops in private homes during peacetime
th 4 Amendment • No searches or seizures of property without a valid warrant describing the place to be searched and the object to be seized.
th 5 Amendment • Must be indicted (grand jury) - formally accused of a crime • No double jeopardycannot be tried twice for the same crime
5 th Amendment You do not have to testify against your self. Ip le d th e 5 th ! Cannot be forced to incriminate yourself (give evidence that will point to your guilt).
th 6 Amendment • Right to a fair and speedy trial: • Told the charges against themselves • Impartial jury • Trial held in district of crime
th 6 Amendment • Confront witnesses against themselves • Subpoena witnesses for themselves • Have an attorney
th 7 Amendment • The right to have a jury in a civil trial
th 8 Amendment • Bail and/or punishment cannot be cruel or unusual
Silent 9 th Amendment The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. • Any individual right not protected in the Bill of rights are protected here in the 9 th amendment RIGHTS
th 10 Amendment • All power not delegated (given) to the Federal government is reserved (saved) for the state governments.

Civil War Amendments • 13 th amendment • Former slaves are now free • No slavery allowed in the U. S. and territories
Civil War Amendments • 14 th Amendment • All former slaves are citizens • All born or naturalized citizens are entitled to due process of law
Civil War Amendments • 15 th Amendment • All males 21 years or older are eligible to vote regardless of former conditions of servitude, race, or creed.
