The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) for Six. Track A. Mereghetti 21 Nov 2019 A. Mereghetti, ABP info meeting 2
The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) • • BOINC is an open-source middleware system which supports volunteer (and grid) computing; BOINC aims to enable researches to tap into the enormous processing resources of multiple personal computers among the world; Anyone can make available CPU time of its own PC for free to scientists all around the world, to help scientific advancement; More info at: • • BOINC website: https: //boinc. berkeley. edu Wikipedia: https: //en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Berkeley_Open_Infrastructure_for_Network_Computing 21 Nov 2019 A. LHC@Home • • • LHC@Home is the BOINC-based project at CERN for volunteer computing; Volunteers routinely run applications by LHC experiments (e. g. for reconstruction of events), by the Theory group, …and Six. Track; More info: • • J. Barranco et al. , “LHC@Home: a BOINC-based volunteer computing infrastructure for physics studies at CERN”, Open Eng. 2017; 7: 379– 393 (2017); https: //lhcathome. web. cern. ch/projects/sixtrack 21 Nov 2019 A. Number of Jobs/Users – Six. Track Over the last 20 months: • • • Typical Six. Track jobs on BOINC are large parameter scans of DA; • • k c Tra Six ~4 k users running Six. Track jobs in the last 24 h, amounting to ~100 k tasks steadily crunched; Six. Track jobs presently last ~4 h – for comparison, jobs by experiments can last up to ~1 d; …but collimation will join soon! Users running Six. Track jobs in the last 24 h Only 106 turns jobs Mixture of 105 and 106 turns jobs 21 Nov 2019 A. Mereghetti, ABP info meeting 5
Cumulative Number of Jobs – Six. Track • Numbers fluctuate a lot, depending on available number of tasks and their duration, currently: • On average: ~12. 5 M jobs/year completed and returned to CERN; • Presently: ~40 k jobs/day completed and returned to CERN; • A one-to-one comparison to the CERN batch system capabilities cannot be done, due to the broad differences of volunteers’ PCs and computing settings; Nevertheless, IT compare CPU power on LHC@Home to half that of the CERN batch system; LHC@Home is fundamental for Six. Track – otherwise, users would easily saturate their quotas on the CERN batch system; • • Six. Track tasks are run on different machines/OSs/architectures; The same task is run twice by two different hosts, and results are compared, to make sure that they are free of transients on hosts; 21 Nov 2019 A. You Can Contribute to LHC@Home • • • You can contribute to LHC@Home with your PCs, e. g. the CERN desktop PC; You have full control on the resources that you make available (e. g. how many CPUs, for how much time, in which hours of the day, etc…); IT-managed MS Windows PCs have already the possibility to install BOINC via CMF; Instructions for installation on other platforms can be found here; Some people in ABP already give their contribution to LHC@Home with BOINC installed on their work PCs, run when resources are spared: R. De Maria, A. Mereghetti, J. Molson, V. Olsen, … You are very welcome to join the team! 21 Nov 2019 A. Mereghetti, ABP info meeting 7

Active Volunteers/Hosts – LHC@Home Hosts that have recently contributed to LHC@Home (within weeks/months) Hosts that have contributed at least once to LHC@Home Corresponding to ~11 k and 164 k users • Oscillations are due to computing preferences of LHC@Home volunteers (and their hosts), since volunteers may run: • • Not only Six. Track but also applications from experiments (e. g. ATLAS, CMS, etc…) or from Theory; Tasks also from other projects, e. g. Einstein@Home (LIGO), SETI@Home (extra-terrestrial life), etc…; A. Mereghetti, ABP info meeting 21 Nov 2019 9
New Users/Hosts – LHC@Home • New users and hosts get registered daily to LHC@Home: • • (potentially) infinite computing potential! There is potential for involving also CERN desktop PCs in offices; New users registered since beginning of plot New hosts registered since beginning of plot 21 Nov 2019 A.
