Conflict Before the End of WWII • Russia is part of the Allied Powers – Allies did not help against the Germans – US and GB attempted to “cool” the Bolshevik Revolution – Allies resent Germany’s secret pact
Conference at Yalta • Before the war ends • Meeting of the Big Three – FDR (US) • Promote democracy in world – Winston Churchill (GB) • Restore the British Empire – Joseph Stalin (Russia) • Protect borders and rebuild the country – Soviet Union would receive money from Germany • Allies knew they would pay the price – Germany would be divided
The Iron Curtain • The term was created by Winston Churchill – Begins the Cold War • The Soviet influence (Warsaw Pact) • Capitalistic influence – NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) • FDR dies before the war is over – Truman is not informed about major issues (Atom Bomb)
Potsdam Meeting • Truman does not reveal the atomic secret (Manhattan Project) • Decide Germany will be divided into East and West • After meeting, Truman decides to “contain” communism throughout the world
Truman Doctrine • Money raised to help rebuild Turkey and Greece • Congress buys the idea to stop the spread of communism – Europe is in shambles from the war • The foreign policy for years to come • Marshall Plan – Gives $17 billion to rebuild all of Europe
