Impacts on War It was the turning point in the use of artillery (French Creeping artillery barrage). Bite and hold tactics were developed. Small unit infantry used more widely in the war. This battle was a Turning point in allies favor. Hindenburg and Ludendorff replaced Falkenhayn on German west front. Nivelle replaced Joffre as commander of French forces.
Impacts on Europe An Estimated 700, 000 men died in Verdun, of which 150, 000 were never identified. The landscape around Verdun was completely demolished by artillery shells. Nine villages that surrounded Verdun were completely destroyed. Soldiers that survived returned to an alien world. Led to The French Army Mutiny of 1917
