THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS
The Battle of Hastings took place on 14 October 1066. At the time of the Norman invasion of the British Isles. The challenge that forces led by the Duke of Normandy William broke up the army of King Harold II of England.
The reasons for the invasion of Norwegians : Edward took the authorities in England promised the prince Wilhem that after his death he would rule in the state, but appointed Harold. Wilhelm felt cheated and referred to the promise made to him by Edward. Wilhelm began to gather troops and prepare for an invasion. King Harold convened a militia , but because until 8 September Normans arrived there , he sent soldiers to their homes. It was not until September 27 , Wilhelm led troops set off towards the British coast.
Viking invasions Meanwhile, in the north of the country Vikings landed a strong army led by the king of Norway - Harald Hardrad, who had his own claim to the throne of England. September 25 Hardrada fought a bloody battle that ended with his death. Viking fleet sail on.

On the left wing became the army of Brittany commanded by Count Alan of Brittany , on the right the French knights and mercenaries under the command of Count Eustace of Boulogne and Roger Montgomerie , while in the center stood the military formation led by the Norman William.

The importance of the battle. After the challenge Wilhelm took Dover and London , where on Christmas Day 1066. Was crowned King of England. In less than three years Prince William conquered the whole of England went down in history as William the Conqueror. He began a new period in the history of the British Isles and the world.
