Harold’s army were prepared at the top of the hill with a small forest behind him. Harold’s best men stood in a line with their axes in their hands. William’s men tried to get up the hill on horses but they were forced back.
Diagrams of the Battle of Hastings William came up with a clever plan. He decided to tell his men to pretend to walk away from the battle in defeat. Harold fell for this trick and ordered his men to leave the hill and chase William’s men. Once Harold’s men had left the hill William’s men turned around and fought them. Harold was killed in the fighting.
