Numerators & Denominators 2 Numerator; tells how many parts in the fraction 5 Denominator; tells how many equal parts in whole object In fraction form, how many pieces of pizza have pepperoni? The denominator in this fraction would be 8 (total amount of pizza slices) and the numerator would be 2 (how many pieces have pepperoni). Therefore, 2/8 (or ¼) of the slices have pepperoni.
Adding Fractions Three simple steps to adding fractions: 1) Make sure the denominators are equal 2) Add the numerators only and keep the denominator the same number as it was 3) Simplify the fraction if needed Examples: = 1/6 + 2/6 = 3/6 3/8 + 4/8 = 7/8 2/9 + 1/9 = 3/9 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3 = 1/2 = 1/3
Finding Common Denominators A least common denominator is the least common multiple of the denominators What is a multiple? The result of multiplying by a whole number. For example) Some multiples of 3 are: 3, 6, 12, 15, 18 Some multiples of 5 are: 5, 10, 15, 20 The least common multiple of these two numbers would be 15 because it is the smallest multiple that they have in common.
Multiplying Fractions Steps to multiplying fractions: 1) Multiply the top numbers (numerators) 2) Multiply the bottom numbers (denominators) 3) Simplify if needed *There is no need to find a common denominator when multiplying fractions. * Example) 2 X 1 = 2 or 3 4 12 1 6
